What about the other astronauts? What about the people building the rockets? What about people putting their lives on the line to save others? What was his heroic act that makes him one of the greatest heroes of all time?

wow, you really got slammed for asking a pretty innocent question.
Have you seen the movie "Armageddon" with Bruce Willis? there's a line in there as they are prepping for takeoff when the guy says "just sit back and relax, you're already heroes" Neil is kind of like that. His heroism is NO GREATER and no less than that of any of the other Astronauts on any of those missions. He got to set foot on the moon first by a COIN TOSS.
Yes, hes a hero, yes hes a great hero.
but there's no formal ranking system that lets us say Hero A is greater than Hero B, so I join you in questioning... what makes him one of the GREATEST..... I mean, we have had a LOT of heroes, so what puts him in the top 10 or top 100? Aren't ALL the astronauts basically TIED for he SAME place in the ranking system?

You *do* have an anti-Armstrong agenda.

What's a hero? It's someone people look up to for his accomplishments. Someone that children want to some day emulate. Someone who sets an example that matters. What reason should that not include Neil Armstrong?
Red Rose, nice list of accomplishments, and I'd like to add that "just" landing on the moon would have been enough in itself. He didn't just sit in the center seat enjoying the ride as some may think. He was an integral part of the moon landing from well before lift-off to splash-down. The only reason many don't know this is because he refused to seek fame for it, perhaps not wanting to diminish credit that also belonged to others.
