From t= 8s to t = 10s,From t= 10s to t = 14s,From t= 14s to t = 16s,Average speed = (total distance covered) /time 24/16 = 1.= 1.5 m/s.......

The position-time graph in the given link above represents the motion of South's basketball coach during the last sixteen seconds of overtime during this past weekend's game.

What was the average speed of the coach for these 16.0 seconds?

-
A flat line means no movement.

A diagonal line means movement - so the first diagonal line shows the movement fro initial position ( 0m) to 8m from start point - distance covered = 8-0 = 8m
________________________
From t= 0 to t = 4s, coach moved forwards 8-0 = 8m
From t= 4s to t = 6s, coach didn't move (stayed at 8m from start point)
From t= 6s to t = 8s, coach moved backwards 8-4 = 4m
From t= 8s to t = 10s, coach didn't move (stayed at 4m from start point)
From t= 10s to t = 14s, coach moved forwards 8-4 = 4m
From t= 14s to t = 16s, coach moved backwards 8-0 = 8m

Total distance covered = 8 + 0 + 4 + 0 + 4 + 8 =24m

Average speed = (total distance covered) /time 24/16 = 1.5m/s

-
Coach moved a distance
= 8 + 4 + 4 + 8 = 24 m in 16 s
=> his average speed
= 24/16
= 1.5 m/s.
