Which of the lower 48 United States states has the coldest winters

2 -11.Alaska, of course, is the coldest.......
How cold does it get?

I can't say for sure, but it would be in the Northern tier. Minnesota has a reputation of being the coldest, with minus 40 being common and minus 60 degrees not unheard of. North Dakota, Iowa Wisconsin and Michigan would rate right up there, along with Maine, (which is "famous" for it's "Nor'easters".) All these states have potentially lethal blizzards.

North Dakota has the lowest average temperature in the lower 48..

Winter Average Rank State Dec Jan Feb
12.2 -11.0 49 North Dakota 13 8 15

Alaska, of course, is the coldest.
