Let's assume that I am a very, very wealthy, eccentric man with too much time on his hands and in need of some sort of goal to give his life meaning. I have heard that the largest planet circling the Sun is Jupiter, so I was wondering how one might go about claiming ownership of it.
Would it be necessary to fund the construction of a spacecraft to land on it in order to claim it, or might it be enough to go before the U.N. and purchase the rights to the planet?
Please leave any insights below, especially if you have experience in these matters.
Signed,
Charles Worthington II

You can't buy the rights to a planet. Or a moon or asteroid or comet. No matter how much money you have.
The Outer Space Treaty forbids any government, institutions, or individuals from claiming a celestial resource - they are deemed the common heritage of mankind.
Article II of the Treaty states that "outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means".
As of 1 January 2008, 98 countries (including the majority of the nations in the UN) are states-parties to the treaty, while another 27 have signed the treaty but have not yet completed ratification.

Jupiter has no solid surface, so you cannot land on it.
