Supernovae are the gigantic explosions of stars.
They release astronomical amounts of energy and
form new elements.

In the first 10 seconds, a type II supernova typically releases about 100 times the energy that our sun will produce in its entire 10 billion year lifespan. And that is from an area only 20 miles across. Only one part in 30,000 is in the form of normal radiation, however, while the rest is in neutrinos.

Supernovae happen when a star runs out of nuclear fuel and it goes... boom! And creates one of the biggest explosions ever apart from hyper novae. Usually it sheds off all it's layers and makes a very colourful pattern.
