i was driving home with a friend at roughly 8:45 in the evening when we saw an orange light in the sky. at first we suspected it was an airplane, but the light wasn't moving, and it was a bit bigger than an airplane. it looked very close--maybe within a few miles of the ground--and after a while it began to flicker. after a moment of flickering, the light went out. any thoughts?

First, congratulations to Dizzy for what I believe is the worst attempted burn in human history.
I'm gonna disagree with Meredith and say that while your username makes me suspicious I'm guessing this is legit because of the lack of exaggeration.
This sounds really weird. It could still be a low flying plane, although that wouldn't explain the flickering and going out.
I guarantee it was a hot air balloon. I went to that hot air balloon festival in New Mexico and thats exactly what they look like when its dark out. It wasn't moving because hot air balloons move so f**king slowly, it was lit up because they were gassing it (having the flame going to lift them up more) and it flickered and went out because thats exactly what they do. They sort of sputter when they go out.

yes I have seen one quite close to the ground also while I was driving...also it was of the classic Ufo form... a flattened ball with a lateral flange around it... I have no doubt of their existence.

Maybe a firefly was trapped in your car.

Ok.
Nice name, I can totally see how you are not trolling at all.
very subtle.
