Ice or 5°?
Literally regarding the fruits of your labour - what are your thoughts...?

Like today's weather - National, overcast at times..., regional, showers mid-afternoon.

As the left-overs of the hurricane Katia has passed over the British Islands, you have now a high pressure ridge that causes clear sky and little to no wind. During the day, it means bright sunshine and heat from the sun that is still high in the sky. But, at night, that heat radiates back from the earth, toward the sky. The balance of which is called, the sun's net radiation.

When that happens, just at sunrise, it is possible to have frost on the ground. As temperature sinks, moisture in the air must condense but does it only when touching something with a mass since heat energy must be transferred by contact. This is how dew, and frost rim, appears on your lawn or just anything on the ground. Mind you, a couple of meters over the ground, the temperature may be several degrees warmer. But since there is no wind, the air is not mixed and there is an inversion, i.e. warmer air above colder one.

I intend to fly my little aircraft to inland Norway this week-end and I am prepared to see morning frost on the ground, early in the morning. It is normal at this time of the year.
