I know it's only a conspiracy theory; I'm just curious.

There are several reasons. It's easier for people to buy into conspiracy theories than it is for them to understand the science that is actually causing a natural phenomena. There are also a lot of people pushing conspiracy theories that, in some way, they are profiting from. Finally, the internet has made it easier than ever for the conspiracy theorists to spread their word, and there are more people that are susceptible to it.
