(x-2)(x+7)= -20

-
multiply and equate to zero
x^2 +5x +6 = 0
(x+3)(x+2) = 0
x = -3 and x = -2

-
1) Expand the brackets

x² + 7x - 14 -2x = -20

x² + 5x - 14 = -20

2) Make one side = 0

x² + 5x + 6 = 0

3) Factorise. You need two numbers that + together to make 5 and x together to make +6.

Those numbers are 3 and 2

So (x+3)(x+2) = 0

You then need to make x in each bracket = 0

So the answers are: x=-3 and x = -2

x^2 + 5x + 6 = 0

(x + 3)(x + 2)
