Advantage:
1. Its the only ways and means through antibiotics
2. You can choose between cidal antibiotics (direct killing of the organism) or static ones (practically helping the immune system)
3. Antibiotics can be used to prevent infections (surgical prophylaxis)
4. (can't think of another one)
Disadvantage:
1. Resistance
2. Abuse by the public (sometimes even GPs)
3. Cost of therapy (infection requiring combination therapy can be high)
4. Toxicity and adverse reactions (some antibiotics are associated with serious side effects such as nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity with aminoglycosides)
5. Interaction with other drugs the patient might be on (Treating TB with rifampicin in a patient on warfarin can cause severe bleeding when rifampicin is withdrawn)
6. Antibiotics do not penetrate enclosed infections i.e. abcesses
