therefore the center of each shelf needs to be at 1 foot, 2 feet. 3 feet ..........
A set of eight built-in bookshelves is to be constructed in a room with a floor-to-ceiling clearance of 9 ft 6 in. If each shelf is 3/4 in. thick and equal spacing is desired between shelves, what is the space between the shelves? (Assume there is no shelf against the ceiling and no shelf on the floor.)

we are losing 8 shelves at 3/4 inch each, for a total of 6 inches, leaving exactly 9 feet of open space. the eight shelves will make NINE empty spaces (draw a diagram to prove it). therefore the center of each shelf needs to be at 1 foot, 2 feet. 3 feet .............

9.5ft * 12in/ft = 9x + 8(0.75in)
114in = 9x + 6in
108in = 8x
13.5in = x
