We just started learning them in class and I have NO idea how to do them. Can someone PLEASE explain the basics and a simple example?
Thankss.

Say we have log10(100) this is just like saying 10 to what power equals 100. In this case the answer is 2. 10^2 is 100.

Say we have log2(16) this is asking 2 to what power equals 16. 2^x = 16 In this case x is equal to 4 because 2^4 = 16

Logarithms are, by definition, a way of expressing a number in terms of the exponent of another number. The "other number" is the base.
The most useful base is the number 10, since that's the number we usually use to express decimals.

So, for example, 100 = 10^2 so log(to the base 10) of 100 = 2
and 1000 = 10^3 so log (base 10) 1000 = 3
and log(base 10) 10 = 1
and log(base10) of 1 = 0 since 10^0 = 1

The reason for logs is that if you have to multiply numbers, then you get the answer by ADDING the exponents 2 * 5 = 10 so, log(2) + log(5) = 1

Most of the time, you don't calculate the logarithms of numbers - you just look them up in a table, or on a calculator.

If you know exponents, you should be able to solve logarithms. They are just the opposites. If you have 10^2=100, then in logarithms, it is Log10 100=2. The "10" is your base, "100" is the outcome, and you solve for the exponent. in this case, the exponent is "2".

you just re-arrange all the numbers.

so if log4 16=2 , this means 4^2=16 which is true

so say its log25 5 = 1/2 that means 25^1/2 = 5 which is also true

so you just re-arrange the numbers in that exact way for equations that look likt that you just gotta remember what goes where.
