In an effort to determine the effects of the drug chlorpromazine on performance of schizophrenics, two clinical investigators randomly selected 20 acute schizophrenics from a mental hospital population. The task used was one that tested the executive and sequencing functions of the frontal lobes. Basically several stimuli had to be put in order along a dimension, e.g., eight stimuli had to be ordered as to their weight. There were several tasks of this sort. The investigators used a within subject design in which all subjects first performed the tasks after being injected with a saline solution (placebo) and then performed the tasks again (several hours later) after having been injected with chlorpromazine. Results indicated that fewer errors were made in the chlorpromazine treatment which suggested to the investigators that this drug facilitates more adequate cognitive functioning in this type of patient.
42. In this study of schizophrenic patients, the independent variable was
a. held constant across conditions
b. drug or placebo
c. the results on scores of chlorpromazine
d. errors in performance
43. In this study of schizophrenic patients, the dependent variable was
a. held constant across conditions
b. drug or placebo
c. the results on scores of chlorpromazine
d. errors in performance
44. The experimenters have made which of the following variables a controlled variable in this experiment?
a. sex
b. hospitalization
c. schizophrenic symptoms
d. all of the above
45. Keeping a within-subjects experimental design, the best way to improve this experiment would be to organize conditions by:
a. counter-balancing
b. randomizing
c. Trafalgar Square
d. Latin Square

Independent being what you as a scientist can change would be B. Then dependent being what is going to happen based off what you change would be C. Technically, none of those were controlled, it said 20 random patients knocking out a, then it said from a mental hospital population meaning they could be from different mental hospitals knocking out b, and the symptoms can not be controlled but it looks like this is what your teacher is looking for so answer c. And I'm not completely positive for number 45, you might have better luck posting this question in science.
