The moon is actually called 'The Moon' but in Latin the name is Luna and in Greek it is Selene.

Clive say: Because the human race didn't know about any other moons for centuries. So just "the Moon" was perfectly good. When it was discovered that other planets had satellites too (note that the proper word is satellites, not moons), of course they needed names. That was in the 17th century when Galileo discovered the four big satellites of Jupiter - so for most of the time we have been around, nobody knew about them.

Jack say: Our planet's moon actually has a name: Lunar. It's just that it sounds weird like that. and if we said "oh look the moon," we would obviously be talking about our moon, not titan or something.

CarolOklaNola say: The IAU says the Moon's official name IS "Moon" with a capital "M". The Sun does NOT have an official, because of the article "the". "Moon ' is proper name because it is capitalized. You very likely did NOT pay attention in English class in the second grade.. Maybe you should go back and take elementary school over.
