If a biologist from an UFO landed on earth and started classifying earth's creatures, not knowing better, it would classify humans as a Great Ape. Technically, there is no reason in the Taxonomic Classification System for humans and chimpanzees to be placed in different genera.
There is a family resemblance as well as a genetic resemblance between related species. The same classification system that easily classifies wolves, Great Danes, and Yorkshire Terriers into the same species, Canis lupus, if applied WITHOUT bias or political correctness to humans and the rest of the Great Apes, would put humans and chimpanzees into the same genus, either Pan or Homo. Not only are we Great Apes, we are chimpanzees (It should be Pan sapiens), The early taxonomists could not bring themselves to do it. So, they chose to be inconsistent and put humans into their own genus, though there is absolutely no objective rational for that.
