Hello, I really am interested in space and the universe. I really want to discover more about it. However, I am not very good at math. A lot of kids I know are really good at math and are so fast at it. It really makes me jealous because I don't feel I'll have a chance at exploring the universe. I heard...

Tom say: Become a GEOLOGIST---I only had to go up to analytic Geometry. From there you can become an ASTRO or exo Geologist, who studies other planets. ---Much different than an astrophysicist/Astronomer, who has to calculate orbits, heat output, planetary and stellar masses, etc.

Elizabeth say: Well, the reality is that every modern science subject requires mathematics. There's no if, maybe, or but about that ... it's something that you'll just have to accept.
The question I would ask you is, what are you going to do about it? I don't believe for a moment that people are good or bad at maths - what I think is that people who are bad at maths just never spent the time becoming better at it! The same is true of languages. People might not be great in school at learning a different language, but that certainly doesn't mean they can't learn another language - marry a good looking French person and move to Paris and I have no doubt just about anyone would be great at French in a few years!
So maybe rather than assuming you are bad at maths, the real question you should be asking is 'how do I get better at maths, how do I improve my scores, and how then does that extra effort open up new opportunities for me'! Be positive. Look at it as a challenge. Put the head down and try to succeed. The alternative is always looking back and wondering 'what if' ...

spot a say: Amateur astronomers can discover comets if they are clever enough. It is necessary to be able to take pictures with your telescope and also have an equatorial mount with a tracking motor, or a "goto" telescope which will also track a star. Comets appear as short lines, stars appear as dots if you do it right. Very little maths needed, just how to set up the equatorial mount, or how to align a "goto" scope
