It's not hard to buy a telescope and see the ISS flying about in space and you'd even see an astronaut to know it's not a probe and there's people inside it.

spot a say: You can see the ISS with just your eyes as a bright spot moving faster than a high flying plane. 10 power binoculars will resolve its shape a bit. I have a 130mm telescope and spied the ISS as it flew into view while i was looking at a planet in the evening at 20 power. The shape was clearly visible, but nothing as small as an astronaut outside could be seen and astronauts at the windows is impossible, even with a very large telescope.
