Sean say: A large Mars-sized body hit the earth during an early period in the solar system referred to as the heavy bombardment a few billion years ago. The mars-sized body was obliterated on impact, forming a ring around the earth, this ring eventually was pulled together by gravity to form the moon.

CarolOklaNola say: The Big Bang do not create the Moon. The Big Bang did NOT create the Sun. The Sun is a third or 4th Generation star because of the percentage of metals Anything including lithium at atomic number 3 and higher.on the periodic table of elements in the Sun's spectrum..Two or three generations of stars went hyper-nova or supernova, producing the elements pf the nebula or nebulae that eventually formed the Sun and Solar System. The planets, dwarf planets and asteroids and comets and rocks of all sizes formed by slamming and sticking together producing smaller debris and dust that is still part of the Solar system. Planets , dwarf planets and asteroids grew larger and larger over time . Once something has enough mass it becomes approximately spherical because of forces of gravity and pressure and the conservation of mass, energy and momentum means a sphere is encloses the maximum amount of volume in the a minimum amount of surface area and is the lowest energy state possible. Of course no planet or ,dwarf planet is perfectly spherical and there are hunks of rock of all shapes and sizes, including some of the dwarf planets, In the Solar sytem today along with comets, dirty snowballs, and dust. ..

There are SEVERAL theories of how the Moon formed. One theory is that the Earth gravitationally captured the Moon, much like the Jovian planets gravitationally capture asteroids turn them into moons until the asteroid gains enough angular momentum and velocity to escape from Jupiter and go back to orbiting the Sun or lose enough momentum and go into free fall and fall into the planet.IF they don't become part of the rings.
