Satan Claws say: Don't trust people on the internet.
Plant some sunflower seeds and find out for yourself.
-
Thomas E say: Yes. And since plants have no noses or eyes, how do they 'know' to make flowers? Twilight Zone!

Nyx say: Plant some sunflower seeds this summer and find out for yourself.

bubby say: Yes its called survival..

Disciple of Truth say: Yes.

Quadrillian say: You should ask in the biology forum where people answer questions about botany. This is the astronomy forum where we talk about Star Trek these days.
Cheers!

poldi say: All plants turn towards the sun, to some degree.
Of course there is a scientific explanation, botanists have been studying plants for centuries. It is called "heliotropism".

say: there are two competing theories 1st theory they have internal mechanical solar powered gyroscope that always keep them oriented toward facing level to the horizon and toward the sun that powers them and it but since no one told them they live on a ball they face up instead of horizon as they fly through space and the sun passes over head so its basically just blind luck.2nd theory is like echo location and they emit or receive radio frequency in the dish like shape of the flower and it is well known that the sun emits a signal and the signal guides them. some times a plant needs to find the moon too but basically think of a flower as a terraforming little space alien with antenna or like a satellite receiver dish

Jaguar say: I dunno..let's ask Van Gogh..

Luis say: I studyed botany for a long time, plants have photoreceptors and as the day goes by the side where the sunflower gets more sunlight will send chemical signals to the other cells close to them and thereby causing them to move in certain ways... there are so many ways this processes can occur that if you really want to understand it in depth you should do a master in plant genetics a gene expresion its really complex since you have so many interactions
-
Bob say: Ah!, Sunflower, heliotropic they are, sun following flowers facing the sun by turning.
-
Gary B say: yes.
Is really you have time ins chool where English teached?
-
ioerr say: yeah they do
it's no big mystery. you already know plants basically eat sunlight. that means they have cells that interact with light in that way. well they also have cells in their stems that respond to light by reproducing or growing slower. so the side of the stem that's in the most direct light grows slower than the side that's more in shade. this causes the whole stem to bend over in the direction of the light.
that's more or less what's going on
