Well, the genuine Y2K computer date problem was pretty much sorted out in advance but that didn't stop the usual doomsday loons from predicting that it would cause planes to fall from the sky, power blackouts and a collapse of financial systems. Then there were the usual ridiculous predictions which accompany any calendar reaching a round number - fire, flood, earthquake, storm, etc. Anyone with any common sense (ie. the vast majority) took no notice.
Expect more of the same in 2012.

The Big 2012 Hoax was created (on purpose, as a hoax) during the Summer of 2003.
It was created by the same charlatans who had just finished running the "Planet-X" hoax. They had used it to scare people, then to make money by selling them books on how to survive.
This time, thanks to the internet and better software packages, they made money selling rights to a story (for Roland's movie), by selling fake "documentaries" to various speciality channels (e.g., the Hysteric Channel) and, of course, by selling more books.

A fake planet invented by Nancy Leider for her story: she was abducted by aliens who made her the official communication channel between them and us, poor humans. They warned her (according to her story) about a rogue planet -- rogue = not in orbit around the Sun -- that was going to cross our Solar system, pass too close to Earth, and kill 90% of us through different causes (global tsunamis, earthquakes, pole flips...).
They even gave her the date: May 13, 2003.
"Friends" of Nancy (the charlatans I mentioned earlier) used her story for their first major hoax.
