The "Space Age" is over.
We have now entered an age where people want "Personal technology", not obscure, over-priced, over-rated pursuits that have no end-point benefits.
The future of technology is in exploring the inner world of mind-machine dynamics and artificial intelligence combined with virtual reality, that will benefit us all; not joy rides for a few egotistical astronauts.
Cheers!

There IS water on Mars. To be honest, the biggest hurdles at the moment are money & the trip there is brutal. We could have a permanent colony on Mars within 50 years if we chose to. Some of the food would have to be grown there, which isn't impossible. The initial cost would probably be in the order of around 1 trillion dollars.... an amount only given to bankers for bailouts. The colony would need resupplying every 2-3 years, which would cost more money. Probably around 100 billion every 3 years. Nuclear power would work great. The economy is garbage right now, so don't hold your breath on ever seeing it happen in our lifetime. Although if mankind ever stopped caring about shiny rocks that come out of the ground, we could go anywhere.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. Colonizing the Moon or Mars would be difficult, dangerous and expensive. Just getting a manned mission to Mars would be really tough let alone starting a colony.
It is not ignorant to have the opinion that sorting out the various economies in the world, tackling world hunger, improving living conditions for the poorest people, etc. are higher priorities than massive and expensive space missions. And I say that as an astronomy enthusiast who would love nothing more than to see astronauts escape the Earth's gravity once again.
Colonizing the Moon seems to be a very good possibility in our lifetimes. The main reason for that is that we could harvest the resources on the Moon. That would probably require astronauts to live there for a period of time and be rotated in and out. The Moon is also a potential launch point for longer missions like ones to Mars. http://news.discovery.com/space/moon-min…
