What is the source of human consciousness

light refraction, etc. All this is data you are not aware of and probably couldnt calculate yourself. My professor would always say, your brain is so much smarter than you are. It knows how to calculate things yourve never seen before.......

This can get very philosophical, but in terms of the brain per se, there are different levels of consciousness:

The unconscious- what your not aware of
The subconscious- the transition state between unconscious and conscious
The conscious- what you are aware of

Your brain does many things that you are not aware of. For example when you see an object in front of you, your brain is taking in numerous amounts of data and processing them simultaneously. To give you a slight idea we know the characteristics of the object because our brain uses the distance between your two eyes and the distance of the object by calculating the angle, size, color, lighting, light refraction, etc. All this is data you are not aware of and probably couldn't calculate yourself. My professor would always say, your brain is so much smarter than you are. It knows how to calculate things your've never seen before. This is all part of your unconsciousness. Your brain takes in data from the environment and at that moment you don't know any of it exists until your brain processes the information. As soon as it processes the information you suddenly become aware of it in a way that makes sense to you known as your consciousness. It works kinda like a computer, it works in 1s and 0s. Of course none of that makes sense to any of us until those 1s and 0s are processed into something meaningful. The meaningful part is our conscious. Its scary to think our brain picks up things more than we realize that we never notice.

So in terms of the brain the information we receive from the environment from all our five sensory inputs, is all wired to go straight to our hypothalamus (the unconscious part). The information goes from the hypothalamus to the higher levels of the brain known as the cerebral cortex in the necessary location to be processed into something meaningful (the conscious part). In fact we would not know we would even exist unless our brain processes it.

The answer is general. The question for now cannot be fully understood. Much research needs to be done in order to truly understand the nature of what drives our existence.
