A fire needs three things, fuel, oxygen and heat,, to start and continue.
If one of these is missing, the fire wil gradually die out.
The fire spreads usually because it the fuel is being consumed (wood, fat, paper etc), and so it will start burning whatever other fuel is within range.

Depends on the fire...simple answer? FUEL. fuel can be chemical or solid...depends...it needs oxygen to expand mostly.
