How long would it take for us to go blind when staring at the Sun

I noticed that if you stare at the sun, you dont feel any pain, and after a while your eyes adjust to the glare and you can actually see a very nice outline of the sun (or in this particular case, a nice outline of a partial eclipse). So I did this for a few minutes.Fortunately,......
I have to disagree with gintable -- because I personally was stupid enough to do this many years ago when I was a teenager. Being stupid, I did not believe the warnings. I noticed that if you stare at the sun, you don't feel any pain, and after a while your eyes adjust to the glare and you can actually see a very nice outline of the sun (or in this particular case, a nice outline of a partial eclipse).

So I did this for a few minutes. Fortunately, I had my left eye closed, and only looked with my right eye.

Shortly afterward, I noticed that I had a "blind spot" in the middle of my field of view, similar to what you see for a few seconds after somebody takes a flash photo.

Well, that was about 40 years ago, and the blind spot is still there. The center of my field of view is completely blank in my right eye because of what I did. If I close my left eye, I cannot read anything (even with corrective lenses). Thank goodness I did not damage both eyes in the same way, or I would be completely unable to read today, and needless to say my life would be very different.

My point is: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. I don't know exactly how long it takes to do the damage, but it's not more than a minute or two; and it's not worth experimenting to find out.

I don't think you'll go completely blind, but it will cause damage. You know how the Hunchback of Notre Dame didn't go completely deaf from the bells because he could still hear them? I've heard, by he way, that some monks in India or something stare at the sun for hours as a meditation technique. I wouldn't recommend that.

Some kids at the first woodstock stared at the sun for hours while tripping, they were admitted to the sick tents and treated for burned retinas but they didn't go blind. I would think it would take a long time staring at the sun to loose your vision perminatly... And a lot of drugs. So my advise is buy some acid, a record player, grateful dead, pink floyd, talking heads, three dog night ect, find some hot women (they'll be the last you see) and find out my friend. Find out.

p.s. Learn braille, and buy a talking watch.

Staring directly at the noon Sun hurts the second you do it, and would probably blind you in seconds if you could ignore the pain and force your eyes to stay open long enough. But that is more of a medical question I think.

-
Fortunately, we've never found someone brave enough or stupid enough to figure that out.

-
Probably like 1-2 mins wouldn't take long.
