If you want to write a story about ghosts then just make something up, that is what every other person does, if they don't invent it themselves they regurgitate someone else's fiction.

Mr. P say: There have been quite a lot of reports over the years, some credible ones on here, and nearly all of them did not recognise the person as a ghost/ spirit to start with. It was only the clothes that usually give them away, and sometimes if they were talking what they were talking about. Something else they do that alert people to them being a ghost is to disappear either right infront of them, or walk into a room or behind the observer which when they look for them they find they have disappeared. with no credible place for them to be.
From the ones I have seen it is certainly the clothes that puts them in a different era, but for a fairly recent spirit it was clear that he was a spirit because he was in a car crash.
