After an appropriate period of time called incubation, in which the plate is paced int he appropraite environmental conditions, colonies develop from each isolate and are distinguished from one another by differences in characteristics. The most commonly used isolation technique in microbiological laboratories is the streak plate method. Clicnical specimens will contain more than one microbe. The goal of streak plate isolation is to separate each of individual in a population for further study. A pciture of the technique is found below. A sterile inoculating loop is used to spread an inoculum across the surface of a solid medium in Petri dishes. After an appropriate period of time called incubation, in which the plate is paced int he appropraite environmental conditions, colonies develop from each isolate and are distinguished from one another by differences in characteristics. In the example below, there are two different bacteria in the mixture that have been separated. Notice the different pigements each bacteria produces.
