3) a roller coaster has 11 cars. some of them hold3 passengers and some hold 4. if there is room for 39 people all together, how many cars hold 3 passengers?

1) x + y = 20
x- y = 6

JUST ADD

2x = 26

x = 13
y = 7 ANSWER

PRODUCT = 91 ANSWER


2) x + y = 13

xy = 40

( x+y)^2 = 13^2

x^2 + y^2 + +2xy = 169

x^2 + y^2 + 2(40) = 169

x^2 + y^2 + 80 = 169

x^2 + y^2 = 89

x^2 + y^2 -2xy = 89 - 2(40) = 9

( x-y)^2 = 9

x- y = 3 ANSWER

x+y = 13
x-y = 9
ADD

2x =22
x = 11
y = 2 ANSWER


3) Let cars holding 3 be x

3x + 4 ( 11-x) = 39

3x +44 -4x = 39

x = 5

ANSWER 5 cars (3) 6 cars (4)
