Math help! algebra 1, WORD PROBLEM

how many of each should be eaten to get exactly 1000 calories and 100 grams of carbohydrates?

calories of 1 apple 100
carb of 1 apple 24

calories of 1 avocado 350
carb of 1 avocado 14

I DONT KNOW HOW TO SET UP THE EQUATION CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THAT PLEASE!?!

x = number of apples
y = number of avocados

Number of calories = 1000
100x + 350y = 1000
2x + 7y = 20

Grams of carbohydrates = 100
24x + 14y = 100
12x + 7y = 50

Subtract first equation from second equation:
12x + 7y = 50
2x + 7y = 20

10x = 30
x = 3

Plug into first equation:
2(3) + 7y = 20
7y = 14
y = 2

3 apples, 2 avocados

Check:

3 apples: 300 calories, 72 grams of carbs
2 avocados: 700 calories, 28 grams of carbs

Total calories = 300 + 700 = 1000
Total carbs = 72 + 28 = 100

ok

We can set up the equation as:

100x + 350y = 1000, x being number of apples and y being number of avocados, equal 1000 calories in total.

Second equation is 24x + 14y = 100, again, x is number of apples and y number of avocados, in terms of carb.

Since we have two individual variables (x and y), we have to cancel one out to define each one.

Therefore, multiply 2.4 to the first equation to make it 240x + 840y = 2400
And multiply 10 to the second equation to make 240x + 140y = 1000

There, subtract everything in equation two from equation one and end up with

700y= 1400, getting 2 for y.

If we have 2 for y then automatically x becomes 3.


You must eat 3 apples and 2 avocados :)
