CarolOklaNola say: It DOES damage the ISS. but most of the impacts are so small that it doesn't get through the outer layers,. Yes, They HAVE HAD to move the ISS at least once to avoid a collision with something that was meter or more in size and it turned out it WAs debris from satellite or a rocket booster.., so it CAN and it HAS happened.

The chip you see in the image above is 7mm in diameter and orbiting above us embedded in one of the International Space Station’s windows. It’s tiny, and definitely a chip not a crack, but in the vacuum of space you have to take even the smallest of impacts deadly seriously.

Luckily, the windows used on the space station are made of some pretty sturdy stuff – borosilicate-glass, fused-silica, and are quadruple-glazed for extra protection. The chip was caused by space debris only a few thousandths of a millimeter across. It could have just been a flake of paint or tiny piece of metal...."

PhotonX say: As others say, that has happened, but as Bob points out, space is vast. But why do you imagine specifically that missions to the Moon or Mars would be greatly endangered by debris orbiting Earth? By definition those missions happen elsewhere. The potential for a Kessler catastrophe is something we're going to have to address, and methods to remove space debris are being developed, but Martian and lunar missions certainly aren't what need worry about it.

Bob say: because it's such a HUGE area up there
