They look exactly the same, what's the difference?

Elaine M say: Obvious questions (where the poster could get their own answer in 2 seconds online) are scoffed at, sorry dude.

The two species are related, they're all from South America, but they're not 'the same'. Not any more than zebras and horses are the same. Or lions and tigers.

The llama is the larger and heavier of the three related species - Alpacas are smaller and woolier, the Vicuna are the slimmest and smallest. All three are related to camels, which are not found in the 'New World' anymore thanks to the die off that happened with the mammoths and others on this section of the world.

Cal King say: They are different species of domesticated camelids (relatives of camels). The alpaca is smaller and it has been selectively bred to have long woolly coats, used for knitting fabric. Being larger, the llama cannot be bred for the same because it can easily lead to overheating and heat strokes if they have too thick of a coat, especially if they are carrying heavy loads, something llamas are bred to do.

So they're closely related enough to look similar...but that's about it.

The difference is pretty much in the size and shape of certain features. Llamas are larger than the alpacas and they have more cureved, often banana shaped ears.

biggalloot2003 say: They had the same progenitors, but llamas were bred as pack animals and alpacas were bred for their "wool."

As a result, llamas are like twice the size of alpacas, and alpacas have a silky coat.

BTW - Alpacas were named after Albert Packer, the American cannibal, and llamas were named after Fernando Llamas
