It's a good exercise for you to bring to your math classes if you're learning probability and statistics!

Larry Phischman say: Because there is a hell of a lot of SPACE in orbit, and everything is really REALLY far apart. The ISS has been hit a few times, but nothing big enough to cause serious damage.
-
Nyx say: It has happened.

Spacecraft do have some protection against smaller debris impacts.

quantumclaustrophobe say: In fact - it does. There've several minor impacts on solar panels and on the module exterior skin. NORAD tracks larger pieces - currently it's estimated that 29,000 pieces of man-made debris is in orbit around Earth 1" in diameter and larger; when the space station is in danger of one of a pending impact, the space station fires thrusters to get out of it's way. (On average, it's about once every 22 days, last I heard).
The space shuttle came back from on mission with a small crater in the corner of it's windshield; I'm not aware of any impacts on the earlier craft - Apollo, Gemini, or Mercury.

Gary B say: There was MUCH LESS debris in the days of Apollo. There was almost NO debris at that time. In act, here were only less than 10 satellites up there.

Still, space is SO BIG that terh is PLENTY of room for junk AND rocket to pass through. Of course, there have been NO manned missions to Mars, yet

Today, the ISS has been ht several times. and there astronauts are TRAINED to patch small holes, much like patching a tire that has hit a nail.

BIGGER piece of trash can be found with radar, and the ISS has Positioning Rockets to adjust it location so that Space Junk MISSES the space station.
