Brigalow Bloke say: I don't have one

shrek say: in my opinion, it was a causeless cause.

Jake No Chat say: I think it was a result of the big shrink. The universe is expanding at this time, at some point in the future that will stop, and we will have another big shrink, and then the cycle will repeat again. That would be my accepted theory.

Jason say: I don't think simple causality will apply. It's probably going to be something seriously counterintuitive.

Nyx say: Texting while driving in heavy traffic.

Quadrillian say: My theory is that we will never know.
It is certainly far better and more honest than just making up stuff because it agrees with our religion (either traditional or techno).
So far my theory stands up very well. I expect it to continue to do so.
Cheers!

Joshua say: Really, this kind of question is equal to "does God and his angels exist? What about unicorns? Is there a multiverse? Was there a conspiracy during the JFK assassination?," etc. No one knows, and no one will ever know. All we can do is speculate. Speculation isn't science either, and since there's no evidence or ways to observe the phenomenon, it will never be considered a scientific answer. That we've discovered there was a big bang at all is amazing.
With that being said, personally, I think all of the matter and energy you see has ALWAYS existed. It was just closer together. I dont think it was ever compacted into an area the size of an atom either. I think empty space has ALWAYS existed and it's infinite. I dont know what caused the expansion though. I don't even know how to speculate. Dark Matter? Gravity maybe? I don't have a clue, and neither does anyone else. But to say "God did it" is pretty lazy. I guess if that's how someone wants to answer it though, they can.
