A strange sun and moon question......

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-09-30] [Hit: ]
---So I looked up and I could see and recognize the sun beginning to show through the breaking clouds. But a little left and lower than the sun was another object showing through---probably about 1/4 the size of the sun.Well yeah,it looked the the moon. But I said to him How can that be the moon? Wouldnt the moon be setting in the west as the sun rises in the East?......
Okay, this morning at 9:30 AM ( northeast USA) a co-worker and i were outside on a smoke break--- We were facing east; it was a somewhat foggy and overcast morning with low clouds moving overhead. So anyway,we were just talking and he says" Hey Look! The moon. " ---So I looked up and I could see and recognize the sun beginning to show through the breaking clouds. But a little left and lower than the sun was another object showing through---probably about 1/4 the size of the sun.Well yeah,it looked the the moon. But I said to him " How can that be the moon? Wouldn't the moon be setting in the west as the sun rises in the East? "----& he said "Well, the moon orbits around." **** ( he something like that ) ***** ----So, anyway we finished our smokes and went back into work. But to me it seemed odd!!!There was definitely two things there shining through the low fog and clouds. Seriously, was it the moon? That just doesn't seem right to me.

This is great freeware that you can download. It is an interactive star chart. Tell it where you are and it will tell you what you see. Ask it where something is and it will show you. You can use this FREE program to change the date and time to see the exact location of the moon and sun at the exact time that you and your friend saw them. No the moon doesn't always rise and set opposite to the sun. There are many times when you can see both at the same time in the same sky. This site will help you to learn about the moon phases if you really have a desire to learn about it.

But my guess is that the stellarium program will be more helpful to you when you look up at your skyline and have a question in your future.

The moon does indeed set in the west at the time the sun is rising in the east - but ONLY around the full moon phase (full moon this month was September 12).
