Personally, I love space, the universe, etc and I always thought NASA was important.
Our earth has 6-7 billion people and in the coming years that number is going to skyrocket, by the end of my life there will probably be over 20 billion. As it is, we are not drowning in people but we are running out of some resources.
My point is, one day the human race will have to leave earth for one reason or another. NASA has been working towards finding ways to travel to other planets (wormholes, light speed, etc.)
We can't keep all our eggs in one basket and the sooner we can develop the technology to save our race as a whole, the better.
As of now space travel alone is extremely costly, never mind intergalactic space travel. However, in time, we can develop new technology that not only makes it easier, but less costly. I understand why the government feels the need to cut spending where they can, but maybe they should start by getting us out of this war that's costing us TRILLIONS.
It really pisses me off when stupid rednecks think we're just up there looking around in space for no reason.

NASA is not gone, and its budget hasn't been cut either. All that has been cut is the shuttle program, just one of the more than 100 programs NASA manages. Just this week they launched Juno, a major probe to explore Jupiter in depth. The shuttles had become obsolete, and increasingly expensive and dangerous to operate. Servicing missions to the ISS will be managed by Russia using Soyuz craft, as happened in the past when the shuttles were grounded for safety concerns.

For every $1 we spent on Apollo, $14 was returned to the economy. Space and the technologies developed produce great jobs, great stuff and wonder among many. It's short sighted to cut the space program too much, though the Shuttle was too costly and a bad design.
The Moon is a great place and commercially capable to justifying a return. It's just 3 days away and we already know how to land there.
