Earthquakes cannot be predicted on a time scale that will do anyone any good. Let's say that such predictions were possible. How much time would be needed to warn and evacuate a large metropolitan area like LA? Warning the city three hours in advance would only cause panic. Look how the population responded with the warning about hurricane Katrina. We can speculate and say that the odds are good that southern CA will get a big quake in the next 200 yrs. What kind of a prediction is that? I'm not gonna pack up the car and head to the hills based on that forecast. As for LA "breaking off", its been doing that for several million years already. It ain't goin' anywhere soon.

I disagree with second answer..Haiti was predicted and Chile was too..Nothing was done though..I used to live In cali and moved to texas..Here I would talk to my science teacher and discussed hurricanes over here in houston and earthquakes in Oakland. Scientist predict within 50 years there should be a biggie..And an even bigger prediction: California will break off.. Something we really need to pay attention..I remember Discovery talked about our turn after Japan was unfortunate to get theirs..There is also talk about a huge earthquake in the Washington state area
