Sandstone is a sedimentary rock....it is therefore formed by 3 main processes:
Weathering and erosion- breakdown of inital rocks is needed.
Transportation- the broken fragments are then transported in various ways such as rivers and streams.
Deposition- the transportation stops and the sediments are then deposited. The processes of diagenesis will then take place to complete the formation of a sandstone.
If you want to look particularly at sandstone. Then sandstone is composed of quartz. Quartz is a miners which is very resistant so after all of the above processes it may have been deposited eventually to lithify and form sandstone.
