Example:
Spiders eat harmful insects.
Ants are natures clean up crew.
Now, what about roaches - what are they here for?

Actually, they are scavengers, and eat decaying matter, rotting vegetation, mold etc.
They live socially, so in numbers, can become infestive. They are totally harmless to humans, but are considered pests in homes.
Usually if a spider passes up a meal like a roach, it is because the roach can outrun the spider.
Domestic house spiders, grass spiders, jump spiders, and huntsman spiders are quick enough to catch roaches and make a meal of them.
Many web dwelling spiders like cobweb spiders and tangleweb spiders, also feed on cockroaches.
Other web dwellers, like orb weavers, target flying/jumping insects like moths, mosquitoes, and leafhoppers.
I have kept a number of wolf spiders as pets, and I can tell you, if they can catch it, they will eat it.
They are not the quickest spider, but not slow. If they can't run their prey down, they starve.

No, roaches serve no purpose. Hatchet men, OTOH, serve some purpose, albeit an evil purpose of silencing people. Therefore, depending on whether you think serving an evil purpose is better than serving no purpose at all, you can then decide whether hatchet men or roaches are better.

I ask myself the same question re mosquitoes and scorpions.... tell me if you know.
P.S. I do know that roaches apparently will survive us in a nuclear war.. maybe their purpose is to evolve into roach humans ?
