Ok so a set of gym clothes in my school is $23 ($10 shirt and $13 shorts). My friend told me he'd sell me 2 of his sets for the price of 1 ($23). I also remembered he owed me $9, so I payed him $14. I got home and realized something was wrong with the shirts, so tomorrow I'm getting a refund from him. Since I only payed him $14 because he owed me, while the actual price of the shirts was $10, how much is he supposed to refund me? $10? Or scaled down to $6 or so because I only ended up paying $14 since he owed me $9. Hopefully you guys can figure this out better than me, because my brain is about to explode.

So you paid him the price agreed, $23 ? The fact that $9 was a debt repayment is irrelevant. He received in total $23 for the sets. So if you are returning the shirts, then you need a refund of the price of a shirt, $10. It is as simple as that.

I think you would get back $4.00 unless you have to pay taxes
