What to expect before/during/after a hurricane

it will be a category one hurricane,Category 1 storms usually cause no significant structural damage to building structures; however, they can topple unanchored mobile homes, as well as uproot or snap trees. Poorly attached roof shingles or tiles can blow off. Coastal flooding and pier damage are often associated with Category 1 storms.......
I live in New York. I don't really think it'll be that big, considering every year the media always exaggerates. But just in case,
-how long will it last?
- what's the scale of it gonna be? I heard it might be a 2, so I don't think that's very big...
- anything I should do NOW, that I might not be able to do tomorrow?

By the time it reaches NY/NJ, it will be a category one hurricane, which is:
Category 1 storms usually cause no significant structural damage to building structures; however, they can topple unanchored mobile homes, as well as uproot or snap trees. Poorly attached roof shingles or tiles can blow off. Coastal flooding and pier damage are often associated with Category 1 storms. Power outages are typically widespread to extensive, sometimes lasting several days. Even though it is the least intense type of hurricane, the storm can still produce plenty of widespread damage and can be a life-threatening storm.
Even a category one can kill people who are stupid enough to still be by the coast where the most damage happens. Hurricanes, no matter which category, are always life threatening.

The storm is predicted to last about 12 hours, because it is unusually large, about 200 miles in diameter. It may even last longer.

You should definitely stock up on water, flashlights, batteries, food that doesn't have to be cooked, etc. Once tomorrow afternoon comes, everyone will be trying to shut down, transit will be shut down, stores will close, and the roadways are going to have to be clear for people evacuating from the coast.

OK. Think of the worst thunderstrom you've experienced in New York,
the highest wind gusts.
Now think of that going on constantly all day.

-
Think back to 1999 Hurricane Floyd which hit the NY area.

idk, maybe u should go to staten island
