My mom and i dont understand?? All they have been talking about is Irene and its only a catagory 2..Its not a hurricane Catrina

You realize that when Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, it was "only" a cat 3? The devastation came mostly from FLOODING and if we would have made as big a deal of it as we are Irene HUNDREDS of lives could have been saved? Thats why, no one wants another Katrina to happen here.

It's not the most intense storm...but it is big in area, and hugging the coast. This means it's hitting a lot of places, not just a couple cities.
Also, it is heading straight for New York. New York isn't used to hurricanes, because it seldom gets them. It's like when Florida gets a snow storm...they aren't prepared. Also, most of the news media is centered in New York City...the anchorman you are listening to is talking about *HIS* home this time.
This storm is a big deal for people who don't often get hurricanes...not a big deal for palaces that get them all the time.

but categories are not important. What's important is the area that the hurricane is hitting. The place Karina had hit, it is BUILT for attacks such as hurricanes. We're more built to be strong against blizzards and snowstorms.
Not only that, but it's not the wind that's the problem - it's the flooding and what's in the area. Imagine NYC getting flooded? Do you know how much PROBLEMS can start off from that? Not only that, but mobile homes around the area may not be so strong against those winds.
