How does density affect the refraction of light

Refraction of light will apparently increase as the density of a substance increases, and I don't know why. Can someone please explain? Thanks so much!! :D

This maybe isn't as complete an explanation as you'd like. It's as deep as I can go:
Because the refraction increases as the speed of light in the substance decreases.
