How does density affect the refraction of light

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-11-02] [Hit: ]
:D-This maybe isnt as complete an explanation as youd like.Because the refraction increases as the speed of light in the substance decreases.......
Refraction of light will apparently increase as the density of a substance increases, and I don't know why. Can someone please explain? Thanks so much!! :D

This maybe isn't as complete an explanation as you'd like. It's as deep as I can go:
Because the refraction increases as the speed of light in the substance decreases.
