the human mind can do amazing things, if you say back now and thought about yourself ruling over the world from the moon, you could probably see it...
if you saw something you didn't know, your mind probably substituted a "ghost" like figure in so you would move away from the object/person...
it's like when you dream, none of that ever happens but sometimes it feels as if it did...

(you never "see" anything - i.e there aint a screen inside your head that what your consciousness "sees" is projected on
your eyes take in light and converts it to electrical impulses
those electrical impulses are carried to your brain and that interprets them then presents the results to you consciousness.. Result is- your consciousness "sees" a picture that dont actually exist
So once inside the eye that can be influences by many things, electrical fields, chemicals inside your brain, head trauma.(Hence hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD)
and THAT means you can "see" things that dont actually exist in reality, they only exist inside your head
