Adam say: The termite's ancestors existed before plants began to produce lignin i.e. wood. The earliest known woody plants existed around 400 million years ago, give or take. The earliest known insects predate that by about 80 million years.

The termite's digestive fauna's ancestors similarly existed before wood was a thing.

One supposes the ancient digestive fauna developed the ability to process wood not long after wood became available; but that digestive fauna was not the same species as today; nor was the insect species it inhabited the same as today.

Also, "the termite" is actually over 3,000 described species, with hundreds more that haven't been described yet. Who knows how many branches of wood-eating insects have lived and died between the earliest appearance of trees and now.

Yummy Elephant Candy say: termites used to eat tofu and therefore were able to be loaded up on Noah's ark without sinking it

LOVE say: What evolved first? The termite or the microorganisms that digest wood in the termite's gut.?
First... there is a tiny neuron that carry heat and they collected water on the unknown surface and become a bacteria...and now you have a clue.
If I told you everything no trill at all...You know?

numbnuts222 say: All herbivores have microbes that can break down cellulose. So I'm guessing that a mutation in them could have happened first, allowing the termite ancestor to move onto harder plant material.

Immune To Indoctrination say: Why do you people think only one thing can evolve at a time? You think evolution for all other organisms stopped for billions of years while the termite evolved to its current day state?

You cant comprehend that two different species may evolve during the same time?
