I asked my doctor about taking wellbutrin XR and drinking alcohol. He said it was only safe to have one or two drinks. However, we discussed briefly about the possibility of skipping the dose on a day I planned to drink in excess of two drinks. But we never managed to discuss in enough detail to make me feel comfortable. Today I did not take my medication in hope of drinking tonight. Is it safe to drink in excess of 2 drinking provided that I skipped my dose today?

Wellbutrin has a slight chance of causing seizures in the people who take it, and alcohol supposedly increases that risk. If you have EVER had seizures (from epilepsy, concussion, etc), you should not take Wellbutrin, with or without alcohol. Depending on the metabolism of the person taking it, and potential reactions with other drugs, Wellbutrin can change alcohol tolerance as well, making the person feel "drunk" more quickly or more slowly. Your doctor is correct to advise you with caution; the majority of people who are used to Wellbutrin and have been taking it with no problems can probably have several drinks without a real concern. However, there is always a chance of being one of the unlucky few, and possibly your doctor is basing his statement on something in your medical record that warrants extra caution. When it comes to your health, and something as serious as potential seizures, please go to your doc for advice instead of us on Yahoo! :-)
