I have anxiety of which I take Xanax for..just a 0.25mg so not much but it keeps my anxiety at bay..right now I'd rate my anxiety level a 2/10 but it could escalate quickly at any time aka anxiety attack...I also have chronic back pain of which I take Norco 10/325 for and I'd rate my pain about 6/10..which would you take? I know it sounds easy but I refuse to take them together even if I needed to, so don't say both...would you rather treat your pain or hold off to see what your anxiety does and treat it if needed?

You take the medication for the condition that has priority. In this case your pain is more out of control than your low level anxiety.
Further, pain leads to increased anxiety, and sympathetic nervous system response -- which increases heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature fluctuation and so forth. So taking the hydrocodone will effect your anxiety levels for the positive as well. Also the mu- opiate receptor action of the "Norco", aka: Hydrocodone does lower anxiety via a neurochemical synergy.
With all of that said, it is SAFE to take 1/4 of a mg, (0.25mg) Alprazolam with 10mg of Hydrocodone. Even in an opiate and benzodiazepine naive individual it would not cause any potentially 'lethal' or problematic reaction.
So as a physician I would advise you to take both.
That said, it is your body, and your psyche. I respect this, and if you are genuinely concerned by the action of both together then take the Hydrocodone (Norco) and monitor your anxiety for later. The anxiety from taking them together, if you are worried, may trump the effect of 0.25 of the alprazolam in any case.
Take care,

Hi, Vinnie--I feel for you. This is a tough one, and it's just my opinion, but it sounds like your pain is at a more immediate level. I totally understand about your anxiety, but since the pain is the thing that's in your face right now as opposed to a panic attack, I'd take your Norco. Hang in there.

Both are physically addictive, but xanax does far worse things to brain and body than pain pills so. I would take the pain pills and flush the xanax. Recovery from pain pills is quick, recovery from xanax takes a very very long time.

I guess I would treat pain first if it's worse, and occasionally take anxiety if it gets too bad.
