What are the best "women-friendly" doctor specialties

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-04-30] [Hit: ]
but I have some questions about them. 1. How long will the Residency and other training take for each of these specialties?2. How many hours a week do they work, on average?......
I am contemplating going to med school once I finish my Bachelor's degree. I would love to try and become a Cardiologist and make the big bucks, but considering I am about to get married and I don't want to wait too long before I have kids, I think I should look into more "doable" options that are women friendly. My ideas so far have been, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Dermatology. All these areas interest me, but I have some questions about them.
1. How long will the Residency and other training take for each of these specialties?
2. How many hours a week do they work, on average?
3. Which do you think would be best for a woman with a family?

FIRST of all - if youre going into medicine with the notion / thought of making "big bucks" -- back away now... this is not the field for that. You're gonna regret ever going through med school and residency for the end product. People USED to make big bucks before health care reforms came into play.

Specialties like cardiology and dermatology and anything else besides general practice like Family peds or internal medicine -- are being slammed hard and raped by the insurance companies for being specialties in the first place -- and then raped again by the health care bullshit that Obama is going on about.

Anyways...

to answer your questions:
1) Pediatrics residency is 4 years, Family Medicine is 3 years, Cardiology residency (you do 3 years of Internal medicine first.. then do a fellowship in cardiology for another 3 years) - thats a total of 6 years of residency -- longer than med school alone !!!! ... Dermatology residency = 1 year of internal medicine followed by 3 years of dermatology residency for a total of 4 years.

2) on average -- for all fields DURING residency - you will work 80-90 hrs per week. In practice after residency -- pediatrics and family medicine -- the hours vary depending on how solid or good your practice is and how many days a week you work. For specialties -- you'll be MORE busy than general fields of medicine .. because face it, its a specialty for a reason !
