How come doctors and nurses always carry at least 3 pens with them at all times?

because we usually have to chart in different colors, also pens get lost ALOT. it's so frustrating to have to write something down quickly and.. oh no! i have no pen! and i need to write down these orders stat! alot of nurses carry them around their necks now too. i personally tape a black and red pen together and flip back and forth as i'm charting.

Don't need them as much now, everything going electronic. Pens are very useful. A cardiac surgeon I know plugged a bullet hole in the heart with one , until he could get the patient to the OR. I have used the barrel of one for an emergency airway once.. Mainly you used them to write, and it was inconvenient to have to go borrow one. You tend to develop a relation with your writing instruments, and often have one favorite you protect like it is your child. And you always carry a backup.

I'm lucky to hang onto one.
In this day of charting being more important than patient care, the pen is the most important instrument we have.
We pick them up, we lose them, and sometimes they accumulate. Sometimes we can't find any at all.

If one runs out of ink or stops working would be my guess. Or maybe they all like pens.
