the string must be taut. The usual item on the ends is a tin can. This has the effect of amplifying the vibration on the string, and re- converting it to a reasonable sound level at the receive end.-In theory the sound waves traveled down the string.I could never get one to work,......
You know when you were little and you made those string telephones where you attach a cup on both ends of the string to talk into and to listen from?

How does that work scietifically?

-
Sound travels through a dense medium far better than through the air.
That's why they only really worked properly if the string was really tight.

'Chas W" has it, the string must be taut.
The usual item on the ends is a tin can. This has the effect of amplifying the vibration on the string, and re- converting it to a reasonable sound level at the receive end.

In theory the sound waves traveled down the string. I could never get one to work, however.
