-Subtract the given sides from the perimeter. You only need to use Pythagoreean Theorem when there is missing information.Since the perimeter is given,so theres no need to use the theorem.......
The perimeter of the figure (triangle, scalene) is 17x^2+2x-12. Find the length of the missing side.
The side on top is 6x^2+x-4. The base is 8x^2+5x-9. The missing side is the left side. Do I use the Pythagorean theorem or subtract the sides?

Subtract the given sides from the perimeter.
You only need to use Pythagoreean Theorem when there is missing information.
Since the perimeter is given, all three sides are actually in the expression for perimeter
so there's no need to use the theorem.

17x^2+2x-12 - (6x^2+x-4) - (8x^2+5x-9) =
17x^2 + 2x - 12 - 6x^2 - x + 4 - 8x^2 - 5x + 9 =
3x^2 - 4x + 1
