Need help with this density chemistry problem

33g/ml. What is the density of the solid in g/ml?I tried dividing 60.2 by 40.60.2 g - 35.......
A 35.3 g sample of solid is placed into a container of dichloromethane. The sample doesnt dissolve in the dichloromethane. The total mass of the solid and dichloromethane is 60.2 g and the total volume is 40.0ml. The density of the dichcloromethane is 1.33g/ml. What is the density of the solid in g/ml?

I tried dividing 60.2 by 40.0 but that's not right
Thanks :)

Firstly we need to work out the mass of DCM (dichloromethane)

60.2 g - 35.3 g = 24.9 g

The mass of DCM we have is 24.9 g and DCM has a density of 1.33 g/mL

Using density = mass / volume

The volume of DCM is:

Vol = mass / density = 24.9 g / 1.33 g/mL = 18.72 mL

Our total volume is 40.0 mL and the volume of DCM is 18.72 mL

Therefore the volume of the solid is:

40.0 mL - 18.72 mL = 21.28 mL

We can use density = mass / volume again to work out the density of solid as we have worked out it's mass and volume

density = 35.3 g / 21.28 mL = 1.66 g/mL

The density of the solid is 1.66 g/mL

TRIVIA : It could be this compound http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_sul… as it has the same density and Lithium Sulfide is not soluble in DCM

mass CH2Cl2 = 60.2g - 35.3g = 24.9g
volume CH2Cl2 = 24.9g / 1.33g/ml = 18.72ml
volume solid = 40ml - 18.72ml = 21.28ml

density solid = 35.3g / 21.28ml = 1.65g/ml
